China
Great Wall hikes, Xi'an's Great Mosque and a Muslim quarter that has been trading for a thousand years
China has roughly 20 million Muslims and a halal food culture that runs far deeper than most travellers expect: Xi'an's Muslim Quarter has been trading for a thousand years, the Great Mosque there is a working centre of community life, and Hui communities across Yunnan and Gansu run halal restaurants as a matter of course. The difficulty is not finding halal food — it is knowing where, which is exactly the problem a planned itinerary solves.
Why China works for Muslim travellers
The four things that actually decide whether a destination is comfortable — food, prayer, the group, and the guide.
Halal where you'd expect it least
Xi'an's Muslim Quarter, Beijing's Niujie district and Hui communities across Yunnan all have established halal food.
The Great Mosque of Xi'an
A working mosque in the middle of the old city, with Chinese temple architecture and an Arabic-script interior.
Prayer planned, not improvised
We route each day past a mosque or arrange a quiet room, including on long Great Wall days.
Small group, English-speaking
16 travellers maximum with an English-speaking guide who knows which kitchens are actually halal.
Top experiences

- ✓Xi'an: the Muslim Quarter and the Great Mosque, plus the Terracotta Army
- ✓Beijing: the Forbidden City, the hutongs and Niujie mosque
- ✓Zhangjiajie: the sandstone pillar landscapes
- ✓Yunnan: Dali and Lijiang, with strong Hui Muslim communities
Halal food & prayer
Halal — qingzhen — restaurants are established in Xi'an, Beijing, Lanzhou, Yunnan and most large cities, usually run by Hui Muslims. We plan every meal in advance rather than leaving it to a phrasebook.
Best time to go
April to May and September to October. Summer is hot and crowded at the main sites; winter is bitter in the north but the Wall is spectacular and empty.
