> The world's easiest halal-food country — island beaches and neon city nights

## Overview

Malaysia is probably the most comfortable country on earth for a Muslim traveller. There is a national halal certification system, halal food is the norm rather than the exception, prayer rooms are signposted in every mall and airport, and English is widely spoken. It is also a country that rewards going beyond the capital: Penang's George Town is one of Asia's great food cities, and Borneo's coast is genuinely wild.

## Why Malaysia works for Muslim travellers

- **A national halal system** — Malaysia runs a formal halal certification scheme, so finding halal food is close to effortless even in small towns.
- **Prayer rooms everywhere** — Signposted surau and prayer rooms in airports, malls, highways rest stops and most hotels.
- **English is widely spoken** — Menus, signs and guides — the easiest large Asian country to travel independently as an English speaker.
- **Beaches and food in one trip** — Penang's street food and Langkawi's islands are a short flight apart.

## Top experiences

- Kuala Lumpur: the Petronas Towers, Masjid Negara and Batu Caves
- Putrajaya: the pink-domed Putra Mosque and the lakefront
- Penang: George Town's street food and the Kapitan Keling Mosque
- Langkawi: island beaches and the cable car
- Borneo: Kota Kinabalu, Mount Kinabalu and the coral islands

## Halal food and prayer

Halal food is the default and certified nationally. Beyond that we simply avoid venues that served alcohol in the same kitchen, and pre-plan seafood and vegetarian backups.

Prayer rooms are signposted almost everywhere, including highway rest stops, so long transfer days are not a problem.

## Best time to go

December to February on the west coast (Penang, Langkawi) and April to September on the east coast. The two coasts have opposite monsoon seasons — worth planning around.

## FAQ

**Is English enough to get around?**
Yes. English is widely spoken in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and the main tourist areas, and signage is bilingual.
